Not sure if you were planning on this but there was an option: install by compiling the source code.
This gave me some clues what is going on with those linux systems so it was helpful both how to install the code::blocks and it helped me out of the darkness.

Just an FYI: Ubuntu is based on Debian.

For that matter, on my Ubuntu 14.04 server machine...

tf2@powerlord:~$ apt-cache search codeblocks
codeblocks - Code::Blocks integrated development environment (IDE)

...which means you can install CodeBlocks directly from the Ubuntu package manager.

(Note: There is a graphical package manager, but being a server, I don't have a GUI set up)

Now... on Linux, there are really two major C/C++ compilers. They are GCC/G++ (aka Old and Busted) and LLVM/clang (aka New Hotness).

...now I want to watch the Men in Black movies.
