What's the difference of defining sprites via HUD.txt and precaching them manually?

If I precache 24 sprites, that would be equal to 24 resources.

Butif I put my 24 sprites into one spr file, then defined them in HUD.txt depending on which dimensions of that single spr file, Does the goldsrc engine consider this as a single resource file or 24 different ones? Note that this is for the sake of avoiding the "Too many resources" issue or the 512 precache limit of the goldsrc engine.
