So about a month ago I had a 512MB VPS where i could run a tf2 server smoothly but it would crash with lack of memory when changing the map. It was using about 480mb of Ram.

So now I bought a 1024MB XEN VPS with 1x2.7GHz that i tought would be enought for 2 servers,
now what happens it that i only have one server yet and 821MB of Ram is being used.
Seriously ? this is frustrating me...

free -m

top command tells a different story:

ps aux:

nothing else is taking memory.

and still... the server crashes when changing map

Is this happening every mapchange or only after some hours ?

what stuff are you running ?
for example: one my ff2 is using 1,5gb ram.

if you do not restart your server ~ once a week you will probably see that his ram will increase.

I'm running a simple gungame with tf2items and a few other plugins.
It gets like this right after I start the server, sometimes it decides to crash on mapchange others it doesn't.
I wanted to open another server in the same machine, but...
I never tought that tf2 could be a outrageous ram sucker :$

what happens if I hit the swap "memory" ?
I have 2048MB Swap

I tried to open 2 more servers, the first is with real players, the other I filled with 32 bots that are playing like mad at dustbowl, the third one is empty and EVERYTHING RUNS AS SMOOTHLY AS BEFORE! The three servers are exactly like the first in terms of plugins/configs.

and funnily...

before:

after:

and no more crashes when changing map...

LOL ?

Linux system is different than windows, it uses free mem space to enhance your computer performance.
According to your image, you had 410MB in use, and 582 is used for performance and can be release and use immediately. Which means you have 582MB free memory.

As long as you swap is zero or stay low you should be fine.

I do not think your server crash is caused by low memory.

Thanks, your post and page were very enlightening. I'll give it a more deep reading and if I have any other issue I'll post.
