This is indeed true. We (Cause4Alarm) have also been experiencing random server crashes for almost a month now. We had been running very stable until about the beginning of last month and nothing was changed with our configs/plugins/servers/etc.

If you are not familiar, we are a old and established CS 1.6 gaming community with 9 servers (all Steam authenticated). I am fairly sure it's an individual (or individuals) causing the crashes, but doing something remotely because we've been unable to "catch" the person(s) since they don't connect to play in the servers.

I am unaware if Valve has been notified of this "new" exploit or if they have made any attempts to rectify the problem. I know for a fact that it has also affected other large gaming communities. Recently we've experienced less of these random crashes, so maybe Valve is working on fixing their code? Let's hope so.

Perhaps if some of the more experienced & trusted coders here could get in touch with "gmansparks" (who claims to have the exploit), further research could be done into this and possibly a temporary fix could be made?

If you can find what exactly this exploit is, since I don't believe that CD key authentication is doing this, then I can definitely send a report to steam, and they will fix it, like they did last time with Joaquim.

you still don't got it, the first handshake between client and server contains a unique value named cdkey, without passing this handshake the exploit is not able to send the crash code. the fix i've tried to create would work if the exploit demo won't generate random cdkey values. anyways, the cdkey hash has nothing to do with the crash code itself.

@gmansparks, the steamid you mentioned is banned by VAC already.
Hence, it simple just create a VAC (VALVe anti cheat) server and you're done!

it's for all types of servers! steam, non-steam.
who ever says no is 100% retarded. because valve atempted to update there engines to fix it, but the exploits still crash the servers. so who ever says it only crashes non-steam servers, is basically saying that valve are helping non-steam.
