I've an 8mbps Internet connection (1024kb/s (1mb/s) download and 128kb/s upload). The server of how many slots can I make on it? My box is ultra powerful so that's not a problem. Can I make lagless 2 servers of 16 slots each? Or tell me how many players it can handle at max?

Definitely not. You've got inadequate upstream to handle that many players. Even if you had the server running at the lowest tickrate possible it'd still lag like crazy.

128 kilobytes per second... what more? How much do you people have?

Upload bandwidth is important when host server.

Let's figure it little bit by this thread.
https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=182167

If players take average 25KB/s.
128KB/s / 25KB/s = 5,12 players.

5 players

*edit
And this was my quick calculating. Could be still lag with 5 players.

I think you mean kilobits per second. I don't think ISPs sell internet plans with a ratio like the one described using kilobytes. If you're not really sure, then do a speed test here http://speedtest.net/ and post the results.

Most servers are hosted in datacenters. Typical speeds are:

10 Mbps (1.25 MB/s) down, 10 Mbps (1.25 MB/s) up
100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s) down, 100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s) up
1000 Mbps (125 MB/s) down, 1000 Mbps (125 MB/s) up

Mbps = mega bits per second
MB/s = mega bytes per second
byte = 8 bits

5 players
He has 128 Kbps (16 KB/s) and not 128 KB/s (1 Mbps). He can handle 64% of a single client. The server will definitely lag.

No, Bacardi is correct, read the OP.
He has an 8/1(Down/Up) Mbps connection, which is pretty standard.

Its kilobytes, not bits. If its kilobits then download is 8mbps and upload is 1mbps.

Ah, I misread his original post (I guess that's what happens when you pull an all-nighter). I thought it was 1Mbps/128Kbps, for some reason entirely missing the 8Mbps.

Either way, you're not going to be able to get a server running well with such low upstream.

How much upstream would it take to make a 32-slot server in kilobytes?

On Steam.com it's been stated:
"1024k uplink = 28 player (19 players for srcds - note 16 players is max for HL2DM)"

Does it mean that I can make a 19 slot server?
