Because they have their own engine that THEY made that they DON'T have to purchase the rights for. And I wonder why nobody has considered the idea that CS:GO is using the latest Source Engine IE: Portal 2's engine.

That might actually be possible since Portal 2 is on the console.

If it's more source like, no thanks. And since they'll be using the source engine - no thanks ;]
Untill now, only 1 1.6 pro gamer called for beta testing. Epic.

No people get upset because they can't even get the versions they currently have working without major complications and updates to fix updates. They already started a beta that isn't even close to being finished. If the beta was completed by 2012 I'd be surprised.

So in short, yes, its upsetting because people realize it's just another game to add to their update list. As if that isn't long enough already.

Or maybe people don't realise that Valve can't maintain games just for free.

Good point. Developers need food, and to get food they need money. To get money they make new games to sell. I don't see anything bad about that.

I can't see why some complain about the Source engine either. Saying it's from 2004 isn't a good enough argument. There have been updates and improvements at least every year, so what we have now is a lot better than the first version from 2004. Switching engine doesn't necessarily mean that the game will be better. All engines have advantages and disadvantages. One major advantage is that we have SourceMod.

You seem to be quite knowledgeable about how Valve should run their business. Care to share your secret?
