hi,

I'm pretty sure this is not a SM issue. And I know that days of TF2 fame have passed. But still I am asking for help

so I run a public TF2 server on a pretty good hardware (i5-2400S) with 100Mbit/s up/down internet. But most of the time game looks choppy, meaning it feels like FPS is about 15-20 (all moves are jerky and aren't natural). Sometimes it looks better, sometimes worse. The best I see just after server restart. I can't figure out what it depends on. It feels bad even when it is empty in the end of the day (as if it is tired after playing); so I restart it and moves become natural again.

First of all my question is: Is it possible to make TF2 server run smoothly at all (for at least 24 players)?

Restart your server once every 24 hours.

What are your rates at? sv_minrate sv_maxrate should both be at 0.

Punch net_graph 5, make sure choke is 0 and sv is 66.7.

sometimes it starts to jitter after 15 minutes, so restart is hardly a solution.

so far sv_minrate was 10000 (like on Valve); sv_maxrate is 0

choke sometimes is bigger than 0, sv is 66

also, updaterate and cmdrate both are 10-66 (like Valve again)

What is CPU usage (%)? 2.5 GHz is not much clock speed.

Does the jitter appear if you do not have SM installed?

2.5GHz of Intel Sandy Bridge is fine, utilization usually is 15-40% of a single core

I set minrate to zero, and disabled SM for a while. I'll see if it change anything tomorrow. I'm quite pessimistic about whole situation ATM though. Thanks for your attention anyway!

I run a 32P MvM server (3 of them) with source tv demo recording and some heavy plugins and don't see any lag (50% core utilization on average), so I can only think of:

- CPU being weak (doesn't seem like it)
- Misconfigured server cvars
- DoS/DDOS attack (very unlikely)

setting minrate to zero and removing metamod didn't change a thing

from your list Potato Uno configuration might be a reason. But I believe it is quite close to default (have just disabled logging).

can I take a look at your MvM server(s)?

Just going to say you get what you pay for when it comes to servers. If you're using a cheap host you are going to have cheap hardware.

so you think the CPU is an issue? Load usually is 20-40%

could it be a router issue ? server works behind a SOHO wifi router Linksys WRT320N

well, honestly, I'm not sure what kind of problem I face. It is hard for me to investigate the issue, since it involves a lot of active players. I wish I had any decent way (a SM plugin etc) to evaluate current server state (cuz now it is quite unreliable; based on feelings; sometimes I'm unable to make a spray though)

my servers are available at:
185.43.236.217:27015 (main; orange)
185.43.236.217:27033 (duel_rg_v6)
maybe someone could take a look and tell how it feels.
