Hi all,

The latest big CSGO update includes the following:
Quote:
No longer exposing the server IP to clients in a circumstance where it wasn’t necessary. This should help prevent some DoS attacks.
Does anyone have any idea how this exactly works? And is it only for official servers or can community servers utilize this feature?

Also, is there anyway to prevent the IP address from showing to the console while connecting?

You cannot comprehensively hide the server IP for community servers since it's a direct connection, unlike official servers which use the SteamNetworkingSockets relaying (formerly SDR).

Is it possible to suppress the "connecting to (ip:port)" output in the client's console then?

if you're worried about people who are not capable of any attacks, then yes there probably is a way to do that.

but it will accomplish NOTHING as it was already said that the connections between the server and players are direct connections, and you can get the IP of the server even from in-game server list.

I do realize that, but my point is if there is a possible way to to lessen the amount of attacks then I'm all up for it.

Hiding address info in the log wont lessen DDOS attacks. People that have enough wits to send attacks dont even use the logs to get addresses.

I still want to know if there is a way to hide the connecting message when you connect to a server (connecting to <ip> in console). I believe it is possible as I was told ESEA actually does it.

No one can prevent the "IP exposure" when it is running "online".

Valve won't even be able to do that for their own servers, ESEA is no exception and won't be able to do it either.

Simply run "netstat" ("-n" parameter for showing numeric IP addresses), from your Windows command prompt or Linux/MAC terminal, and you'll see all connections you have active on your machine.

The same applies to such as exposure for "sv_downloadurl", if you catch the "netstat" during the download of a file from the "sv_downloadurl", you have the IP/hostname of the server. Other network tools can sniff the whole URI address of "sv_downloadurl", etc.

So short: You cannot hide anything that the Internet needs to access.
