I agree. VB > all other forum software by far. Good choice, coca-cola! Now you need to buy a nice skin because the good ones almost always come with a price tag.

Free webspace does have its benefits since it's...well free. It's just that you don't have control over it. Even paid hosting sucks!

I bought IP.Board, IP.Downloads and IP.Blog. $250 is hardly a huge price tag. I should get around to installing ionCube so I can test the IP.Nexus beta.

I had looked at Fireboard for Joomla but their forums described issues using it with Joomla 1.5. I think the particular problem I had when installing it was because PHP had memory_limit set too low, but I only realised this later.

phpBB 3 doesn't have the features of vB and IPB. There were years where development was slow or non-existent and a number of the original team have now left. Because of this they missed release dates by years and in the end released a product that would have been a worthy competitor only when it was originally intended for release - not now.

We dropped phpBB because it was:
1) Limited/lacking features
2) Poorly/messily coded
3) Rife with security problems
4) Barely extensible without touching the actual source code
5) Very inefficient (it was killing our MySQL database)

I don't know whether phpBB3 has changed any of that, but vBulletin or IPB were much better at the time. vBulletin has its own problems, for example, the permissions system is a bit screwy, and the administration panel is really, really awful. But for the most part it's pretty extensible and it will fit most commercial or large-site needs.

I have a feeling that someday we'll end up switching to IPB once people get tired of the theme we have and I get sick of patching vBulletin's crazy theme compatibility breaks. Our theme modifies something like 80 of the templates and vBulletin breaks compatibility against those quite often.
