This is called the "byte order mark" or BOM. You can see this, effectively, in Notepad++ by going to the Encoding menu and checking the encoding. If it's UTF-8 then it's got the BOM. You can change it to "UTF-8 without BOM" to remove the BOM. If nothing is chosen, also choose "UTF-8 without BOM".
