you dont change it. you are probably behind a router/firewall or you are sharing your internet connection with more than one machine via Windows XP ICS (is still a router)
in any case - what you need to do is list your hardware setup. exactly as you connect to the internet so that we can better help you. otherwise these are some terms you might want to look up in google

do you get what I'm getting at? the reason your friend can not see your computer is because the outside world (everyone out of your local area network) has no clue your specific computer exists. all they see is your network ( your router which has a real ip address) . Your router then is forwarding all information to you from the outside world via specific ports to your local IP address ( 192.168.x.x) .
give us your hardware setup info (like model names, numbers, machines, type of connection... etc.) then we can go from there.
