Select Left 4 Dead 2
Then Generate.
It will want you to save the file on your pc, where you will upload it into your addons folder.

Not working for me either on a Linux server.

mmsource-1.9.0-hg722-linux
sourcemod-1.4.0-hg3073-linux
I did upload the vdf too.

Then I renamed the vdf, and tried to load metamod with plugin_load and it loaded, but requested a map change, that of course results in metamod not loading again.

beast-usa and/or step: By not working, do you mean crashing? Be certain you are updating the binaries in addons/metamod/bin and addons/sourcemod/bin from the packages in the first post.

I mean I'm working the whole day on getting the complete server to work again but I hate it when I come so far, but then fail at things that are definately out of my range.

Well, I did a stupid mistake of downloading mm and sm from the official sites thinking they were the same as the first post, they are not. It's working now, thanks :D

Those still having problems, make sure you have no other .vdf files in the addons folder.

Yesterday when all that would work was MM, I tried to get BAT to work with l4d2.

I never did. But I found that if I made a .vdf for BAT, the server would get stuck in a loading loop. If I loaded it with the metaplugins.inf, I just got an error.

Also, make sure that you are using the sourcemod.vdf from the latest build in the metamod fold.

If that doesn't work, try loading sm with only the defaut (or no) plugins.
If that works, load your plugins one at a time. You may find that a plugin is causing the crash.

Not absolutely sure if needed, but did you restart the server after you add admin?
Also did you give yourself z flag?
