As Fysiks said, learn about bit shifting. It doesn't just magically change to 2, there's a meaning to it.
1 << 12 == 2 << 11 == 4 << 10 == 8 << 9
etc

It looks confusing, but it will remain if you don't learn bit shifting.

It's binary shifting, Bugsy wrote an article on this. As computer don't store data as words so it store data as binary( or numbers).
