In the same directory as srcds_run, srcds_linux, etc.

Thanks! Adding the steam.cfg file also worked for me.

Adding the steam.cfg file got my rented linux server working fine but I have 2 windows servers running that are still having problems since the update. Before adding the cfg file neither one would even start, After adding the cfg file they start but as soon as you try to join them they crash.

Also the console in my windows servers are now giving me this error

and neither show up in my steam group servers list anymore

I had that too. I installed Steam and now it works. FYI, Steam does not have to be running. Just install it and close it.

Would this affect our servers not showing up under the Steam Group listings? Please assist. My group needs that listing from Steam. Thanks.

Placing Steam.cfg in ://server/left4dead2 directory where srcds_run and srcds_linux situated didn't help.
But when I placed Steam.cfg in every folder except maps,materials,models the server started=)
Some stupid, but as for a temporary solution it is good.

that was the problem only on windows servers. than the left4downtown guy uploaded a fixed gamedata so that left4downtown no longer crashes.

linux servers that crashes before start needs Steam.cfg.
