Here's my problem:

I have a program that listens for input from COM1, COM2, ... COM9. As far as I know, these ports are all serial ports and have nothing to do with USB.

My computer has no serial ports on it, only USB.

I bought a serial to USB cable (hasn't arrived yet), so I'm connecting the outside hardware with a serial cable to the serial-to-USB cable to the USB port on my computer.

I suspect it won't work, because the program is listening for input from the non-existent serial ports and I'll be sending information to the computer through USB. Is there some software that can solve this problem for me? I've done some searching but haven't found anything conclusive yet.

Upon further review, I think the software that comes with the serial-to-USB converter will take care of the problem.
