It's the same thing with engine. With fakemeta you have to allocate manually, engine does it for you.
With engine you provide the string, which is converted by amxx into an "offset". With fakemeta you need to provide directly the "offset".
There's nothing to be fixed, at most you could say "improve".

Is this plugin still needed or did AMXX 1.8.3 fix it?

But improving this behavior is out of amxx's scope IMO. If you are concerned that badly coded plugins are wasting memory then use this plugin or avoid running bad plugins in the first place.
