Because this is what valve's master server list look like

And this is why i don't open any more servers...

Valve should at least clean that master server list if they want people to run steam only servers..

From any angle you look at it, you're gonna get screwed if you want to open a public server...

You miss the point, it is not that people dont want or dont like to run a steam server, it is that people cannot run a steam only server, sadly..

Btw, for people to not understand me wrong, i'm not trying support non steam, i just want to point some things before Valve's Guardians go all offensive ape shit over non steam users..

From my point of view, as an ex server owner, i'd open tomorrow a steam only server if valve's master server list would be cleared of all those redirects

Nobody use the steammaster list since a long time. Everybody use gametracker.
This put steam and no steam server to same level regarding this point.
This means that there is no reason to run a non steam over a steam server.

There are private master server lists which charge server owners to add their servers temporary to their server list in order to populate them ( those master server lists are included in the popular non steam clients )

Even tho server owners have to pay, it is still giving them an oportunity to populate their servers, unlike steam..

You can't populate a server by adding it to gametracker...

One thing they fixed which massively improved the server list is that fake bots or non-steam players don't show up as players in the server browser anymore. This means a non-steam server with 5 steam players and 20 non steam players on it will show as 5/32 in the steam serverbrowser, while a steam-only server with 10 players will show as 10/32.


I'm not saying getting players on a steam server is easy, but it's not because of the server browser, since most players sort servers by number of players first and join the fullest ones.
It's because most of the playerbase left comes from poorer countries and they're kids, there's no culture of "buying games" here, so the kid just googles "download cs 1.6".
