What I was planning on doing was to take the latest version of Dust 2, decompile it add a few overlays about my community and recompile. Doesn't sound that hard.

After watching a few videos and reading a couple tutorials, I downloaded bspsrc and decompiled de_dust2. After that I loaded up hammer and added my few overlays. Then when I tried to recompile the map, I was getting a tonne of errors.

So my instinct was to delete everything I added and just tried to recompile the exact thing I decompiled in the first place. Same errors.

Something along the lines of "area portal brush doesn't touch 2 areas". So I googled this and found out it's probably because not all area portals are sealed off properly, but that shouldn't be the case right? Because this is a direct decompilation of the Valve's version.

Also I know that decompiling the maps doesn't give perfect replications of the original but I don't know how to fix this.

If anyone is able to shed some light on this I'd be very grateful. Thanks guys!

p.s if this is in the wrong section please move it for me

I would think using Stripper would be much more efficient than having clients download a whole new map, just to include some decals. It would also save you the headaches of fixing all the errors.
