I noticed that the latest snapshot version is 1.8 which hasnt been updated in the rar under modified files since 11/26 but with 1.7 snapshot it says it was modified the other day. Which one is the latest and greatest?

If you see a build with an old date, chances are it's... old.

1.8 on the waterfall page was updated to build3 on the 29th and 1.7 was updated to build 41 a week or 2 ago, I cant tell. When I go to the snapshot page, I want the highest number snapshot. Which snapshot do you suggest?

Those build numbers on the waterfall page don't really matter much. It can increase even when there's a rebuild of the same exact code.

As for the snapshot numbers, a higher number isn't necessarily an indication of being better or more stable or something. The number can go up just from something trivial like adding a comment to the code, updating documentation, or simply fixing a broken build.

Both branches are currently pretty much the same as 1.7.0 with the exception of one minor bug fix (which was applied to both branches). 1.7.1 will likely only contain bug fixes if required. There's one semi-major feature planned for 1.8.0 but nothing has been done for it yet.
