Best is super comparative, what may be good for one server may not result the same for others.
For future support I would suggest switching to Debian, since Ubuntu is somewhat "
losing support". Bleeding edge wise, you'll have the best success and most support from Debian.
I and others, as mentioned, have had great success with XanMod and other
customer kernels. Of course, you will want to set your governor to performance to get baseline necessary performance out of your server. Using a tool such as
tuned will help with that.
All my builds run a kernel whether customer, XanMod, or something else and are all using Debian (except a few on RHEL). They have provided the best results, ranging from i7-4790k to i9-9900k. With a variance as low as 0.001 server variance. You can see from this thread how a custom kernel can make a big difference running tuned and such. -
