Maybe I am completely wrong here, but what if someone uses this in their plugin and one day decides to upload bad/harmful code to peoples servers?

Bad things would happen, but it's not a whole lot more risky than usual since plugins aren't generally reevaluated after being approved.

The same could be said about every application that auto-updates. There is some level of trust involved, and the "notify only" option exists for those that want to play it safe.

doh - I forgot about those - thanks I fixed it

btw... when I was running the plugin enabled with updater but hadn't yet put the .txt file up, updater kept saying something about keyvalue parsing error with a "{" error or something, it happened for 3-4 restarts... I put the files up on the web, restarted the server and that error didn't pop up again.

That's because it tries to parse the 404 error page from the website. There's no simple workaround for this but the console spam should be harmless.
