I use Gentoo Linux 1.4 with kernel 2.6.4

I am able to play Steam with Winex 3.3, on Geforce2MX 400 with nVidia drivers.

Mandrake is FREE. If you look on their website (www.mandrake.org) you'll see that there's a "Community Edition" free to download. Just READ what's written on that website and you'll see.
Second of all... The nVidia drivers have a pretty good documentation. the .run files is a file that you have to "run"
usually you have to chmod it (chmod +x file.run) and then run it with:
./file.run
(replace FILE with the actual file name)

If you're really new to LINUX please RTFM! Documentation is the only thing that linux doesn't miss.
A good start will be (for mandrake users) www.mandrakeuser.org
Alot of howto's are on www.tldp.org
And if you get an error or something learn how to use GOOGLE!
Google is _always_ your friend when you're in trouble.

I don't think FreeBSD would be a good choice for a desktop/workstation. Maybe as a server, yes. And iirc, HLDS doesn't run on FreeBSD

And yes, redhat does have alot of documentation but not as much as Mandrake. Mandrake is even translated in my native language at least 80%.

And btw... if you're having trouble, there are a lot of linux help channels on IRC or forums. I usually hang out in #linuxhelp @ undernet. Come by there if you have any problems ;) but please google before asking.[/url]

use mandrake, it is really user-friendly AND FREE.

please dont state things when you are not sure, it doesn't help, just makes people confused.

Debian is easy for someone who's already used to Linux. I use debian sid... but who wants to explain the installation part to a n00b? I know I don't!
