I recently encountered one of those "Engine error: ED_Alloc: no free edicts" crashes, but the entity that seems to be responsible is an ambient_generic.

My plugin has been updated a few times recently, but I do not create any ambient_generic entities at all.

At the time of the crash there were 637 edicts for ambient_generic.

lighting? New map you are trying to run? Could be you are really high on them already with a new map. I've run into the same problem but till Valve raises the hard limit (which as it is is just stupid) then we are at that mercy of what we can and can't have going.

In this particular case it was on koth_trainsawlaser_b6, but I have seen no issues with this map in the past. This happened after a few minutes with only about 9 players active. It was also after a recent restart, about 50 minutes ago.

If it helps, you can enter "status" into the server console and it prints out the edict limit.

Do that on a fresh server load. Hopefully it is a number < 1200.

It is possible that plugins you have installed could be pushing the edict limit too.

I already checked for all the entities after a fresh load. Put in 7 TF Bots on Cp_Dustbowl and used cl_showents. Nothing unusual showed up.

For TF2 the edict limit is 2048 and cannot be increased.
