Yours sounds better, but again: past perfect instead of simple past tense. While reading again i noticed that i should have used "änderte seinen Namen in". I skipped the personal pronoun.
Before you ask Conor: both are correct, it's just a question of preferences wich time you want to use. As it is an event that just hapened. Simple past would be the better choise.
