I see absolutely no reason for SteamID Replacer to be trashed. If it contradicts with SteamBans, it's SteamBans' problem. What plugin does ain't illegal (unless you prove me wrong) and its use can indeed be fun.

Attempting to censor the plugin on these forums means that:

- The majority of people will go on believing that this method of identification is infallible
- People who are determined enough to find the plugin (i.e. those who want to abuse it) will still find it (or an equivalent) through other sources

And so there is little net benefit. Releasing it would bring out into the open an problem which exists already, but is just unnoticed due to lack of awareness.

It also seems to contradict the reasoning behind the publicization of what is essentially a long list of exploits

This is indeed an exploit. SteamBan is a system put in place to assist fair play of the game. There will always be exploits; however, there is no reason to make an exploit, which is not easy to the average user, easily accessible.

I don't know how many of us, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 99% of all steam users, and now thanks to steamid replacer, that 99% became aware of the fact that they can mess with it in any way they like...

Well, for now his plugin alone killed only steambans project, until (if) they find a way to solve the problem. I don't run a server, but I used to play a lot in the past and I would be really pissed off if I got banned from my favorite server, because someone provided fake demo. I don't know all of the technical details, but I assumed that since you can replace steamid then you can also replace other data to make it look like a certain server and record demo on your own server.

Somehow I've never heard about actually working method of replacing steamids until now. And you are right about censoring - it won't change anything (except prolonging the time until it is widely known), because it's too late. Whether demos with status were perfect "definite proof" or not, doesn't matter. What matter is that they were the best and only reliable in any way proof, but steamid replacer effectively made it less reliable.
