Getting back on topic -- Use whitespace and brackets. It's far better to use whitespace and more efficient indentation, sacrificing speed or convenience than to sacrifice readability for compaction.

Simplified:
Functionality > Readability > Compaction

The compiler doesn't register the whitespace at all, so you're hardly losing out on anything when you indent properly and use whitespace.
