Depends on what kind of server you've been thinking about and what it is supposed to be used for.

"What kind a server" This is the hl1 server forum. Counter-Strike 1.6 servers. Mass Hosting Operating system's Like the ones that Gratisserver.nu uses Some one that Know's? Need super stabile low usage system and it uses minimal Emount of the ram and cpu And give's all of that to the bandwith and the Fps.

I think , the best System operative is Linux ( To host Gameservers CS 1.6 ) . But , i don't know to use -.-

Already know this is HL1 section. I referred to which game(s). Counter-Strike, ok then.
Set maxplayers to 1 with no mods installed on the server. Now you have this "super stabile low usage"!
About bandwidth and FPS, I can not give an good answer for it.
Good luck with that if you have any high traffic plugins installed.

I prefer Windows for hosting since I'm a Windows user.

i use Ubuntu 10.04 that is a Linux based "System" the Krenel is Linux/Debian/unix i dont remember. Dont you Mod's Have A sugestion?

HLDS is optimized for Windows.

Windows is optimized for GUI
Linux is optimized for CLI

It is all personal preference

i got really used to vps (linux servers) so i quite like them. and there abit cheaper ;) i use debian 5.0 on both cs and css servers
