It's not so much that it's better performance-wise, it's that people tend to not like to use cheats around here unless they have no option. i.e. they may feel like they're opening the door to exploits. The ThirdPerson plugin was built around this concept, for example. With my underwater arena I tried to avoid it but unfortunately jarate water uses something similar to cheat thirdperson, so only cheat first/third person would work. r_screenoverlay is probably the most enduring cheat we use around here.

The only advantage my method has over the cheat is it satisfies this basic concern, be it a rational concern or not.
