So then a good thing to do would be to check if you can still connect to your network (ping the router, access another computer, etc.) and narrow down the problem from there.

hes right. Open up ur broswer and see if you can connect to 192.168.0.1 that is in most cases ur routers lan ip. If you can connect to it but can't get online its ur internet or modem. If you can't connect to ur router then ur have networking issues.

Actually, most routers I know of have a default gateway ip of 192.168.1.1, although some use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1 - check your router's manual.

mine is 192.168.1.1 so when my net goes down again type that in. if i dont get anything, then its my router?

Yes, if you go to the command prompt and type ping 192.168.1.1 and don't get a reply (or, if your router uses a webpage for configuration -- as most smaller routers do nowadays -- if you type it into internet explorer and don't get the configuration page), then the problem is most likely your router (at this point, you would want to connect your computer directly to the modem, restart your computer if you don't have Windows XP, and try to access the internet after reconfiguring your computer to directly access the internet).
