well I put the mod on the server and tried having a bunch of friends connect after doing the sm_l8d_enable command and changing the campaign, there were extra healthpacks all over like there should be but once we hit 4 players nobody else could connect and I also found my source log full of these, I also tried spawning 4 extra bots to see if it would allow more people to join but they still got the server full message and the bots wouldn't leave the safehouse or closets

v1.4.2!
+Players can always connect to the server until it is maxed out (May need the Metamod plugin to force your server into a constant 8 slot) this works by tricking the server into versus mode for 0.1 seconds when the player sends a connect signal
+3 commands to handle later-joiners. *1
+sm_l8d_hardzombies - a new command, if you want mass hordes rather than expert mode, you can use this to increase zombie count. This increases the zombie horde amount in multiples of 30 up to 6 (180!) Anything above the value of 3 (90) will cause periods of lag but it's still GREAT fun watching masses run towards players 1 will reset the values to normal.
+Bot "Cleanup" now done. Whenever there is more than 4 survivors and a player disconnects the bot taking over gets removed.

*1
!joingame makes the client perform "jointeam 2" (helpful for those without console). This will take control of a spare bot when they are alive.
!addbot This will create a bot to join the game, IF survivors have not left the safe-room it will spawn immediately, if not, they will spawn in a closet at somepoint through the game. Players unfortunately cannot take control of this bot until their "alive" (rescued).
!away This allows players to go "AFK" (in the chance the option doesn't work, and they do not have the console) , if you do this and you're more than 4 survivors, you will need to use !joingame to rejoin.

Edit:
Hotfix 1.4.3 This removes the "Versus" map requirement to enable Left8Dead. Posted @ edittime

I think the problem with the "quickly switching it to versus so it can have 8 slots" idea is that the map is what determines the slots, not the mode. If this metamod plugin that you speak of truly forces the slots to 8, then I would love to have a link to it.

couldn't you just use sv_visiblemaxplayers 8? or doesn't that change the actual player slots?

I posted previously that it is possible to get people to connect by switching it to versus mode. The latest addition is an automation of that process.

There might be some corner cases where you can't join through the master server list because it preemptively reports server full, but you might be able to join through direct invites. More testing is required to find out all scenarios.

Based on reports from others, it isn't honored.

Unfortunately changing the VISIBLE max players plays no affect on the physical allowed player slot which in a co-op map instance is set to 4. And as mi123645 rightly stated it is forced by the map although it's not quite in the fashion he believes.

In the games physical coding there is an embedded limit detected by the maps name, if it contains "_vs_" then it will force it to 4 max players. however L4D Versus Tools is your ally in alleviating this issue, it forces your server into a perpetual "Versus" mode. Now I do not mean that it literally forces it into versus all the time, but it forces the server to use all 8 slots (Which would normally be Versus mode) and so any players viewing you while your connected to a server with this enabled will see your in "Versus" mode, even if you're playing Left8Dead.

If you're uncertain about this metamod working you're welcome to connect to my communities Left4Dead server where I did all of this testing. I have no special plugins, a simple sourcemod install with Left8Dead and L4D Versus Tools.

I have try 1.4.1 and works better.. i resolve the join problem to use binds to director_human_zombies 0 to 1.

Today i have put 1.4.3 but no working, i select map but the 4 spectators not spawn, i try to !addbot but they can't take bot control.

!jointeam and jointeam 2 not work.

Ah I see now! Thank you for enlightening me on the subject, and I will make good use of L4D Versus Tools.

EDIT: Just found out how to give karma to someone, yay

I have the exactly same problem! No bots spawn, spectators remained as spectators even after next level change.
