Best OS for a counter-strike 1.6 server

Hi there i would like to know what is the best operating system for HLDS (counter-strike server) I have done a little bit of research and found out that linux is able to get 1000fps Stable but which linux / operating system is the best at speed , performance and reliability.

Linux is better for running game servers, you should check CentOS and Debian, and see which suits you best.
As for 1000 FPS you will most likely need to optimize your kernel.

I think il go with debian because I have heard/read really good things about it and by the way how can I optimize the kernel for 1000FPS stable

As per my opinion Windows is good. I host servers and felt that linux is using almost double CPU that windows for same HLDS :S .

Also the sad thing is with linux depending on the kernel version performance depends too much.

Right now I am using windows 2008 with srcdcfpsboost and it's running pretty well at 1000 fps

Please note it's just my personal experience. I am not here to argue whether linux is good or windows.

Quite right!

But I've heard linux uses less system resouces so it gives more resources to hlds.
and can linux achieve 1000FPS stable ?

Of course Linux can achieve stable 1000 FPS, when kernel is recompiled and optimized.

I have run server on windows xp,server 2003,7X64,server 2008 and Debian Stable, Ubuntu( more or less Debian), CentOS 4,CentOS 5, Fedora 14. As far as performance go's i more or less got the same across the board. The Linux distro's i did do the kernel recompile to get the 1k FPS.

Pros for windows - was that it did not take me looking up commands to get started, It also had a desktop to work with.

Cons for windows - No good firewall, Unable to hit 1k FPS stable

Pros for linux - Awsome firewall, easy to secure server from upload exploit (Chmod FTW)

Cons for linux - no desktop//GUI (can be installed tho), Had to learn the os

This is just my XP

what about you vita whats you're system specs? and what os do you use and recommend ?
