Congrats Nick! The right call was made on this one!

And very classy post David. It's sad to see you go after you definitely changed the way most people play Valve/Source games online, That being said, we all knew it would happen eventually as you found bigger and more exciting projects to work on. Best of luck, and hopefully you'll make a huge splash with your future projects!

-Kyle

You left SourceMod to the Psycho Nick? What were you thinking?

Seriously, though, congrats Psycho.

On another subject, is Psychonic also in charge of MetaMod: Source?

Man, I should really say something on here in acknowledgement...
First, thank you for all of the enthusiastic responses.

It might be my name in the hot seat now, but everyone plays their part.

I think that the rest of the active SM dev team members should be acknowledged. As the second newest member, there's obviously been plenty of work done before me, and plenty still being done not directly involving me.

What BAILOPAN said in the first post about community is true.
There are plenty more people contributing to SM than just the dev team.

Some other important groups of people (in no particular order):

Community code contributors
Various people submit patches on their own to fix bugs that they've experienced or to add more functionally for everyone to take advantage of.

Translators
SM 1.4 shipped with support for 23 different languages, aiding accessibility for server admins and users alike. Without the community translators, SM would likely only be available in a small handful of languages.

Plugin writers
There have now been almost 2,000 plugins posted to the forum. There is everything from plugins that just enhance server management to ones that provide entirely new mode of gameplay. You guys are always innovating to come up with more. Better yet, you're sharing your work, letting everyone benefit.

Plugin approvers
These guys have the thankless job of having to read though tons of code and help to protect against server admins running buggy or even unsafe plugins, as well as provide tips to plugin developers on how they can improve their plugins. They cut the crap and let the cream rise to the top.

Bug reporters
Nothing is perfect. When a bug is found in SM or in a base plugin, filing bug reports with useful information helps us to track down and fix issues. We can't read every single forum thread or make guesses based on lack of info, making these people valuable.

Donators
You generously help keep the site running and accessible. The server bills to support our infrastructure aren't cheap, but it's a non-issue because of you. You indirectly power the forums, the website, the bug tracker, the buildbots providing snapshots, and more.

Everyone else
From people who help others out on the forum to idle users that help pad our SM's server count. Keep up the good work.

Lastly, this is worth repeating:

They breed contempt, promoting an upper echelon of users who know what to say, and take satisfaction in saying it. AlliedModders is nowhere near this bad, but it's human nature, and it creeps in. Our demographics and popularity are against us, but this is no excuse. By being supportive of each other's ideas, we encourage further development and involvement. We don't have to promote bad ideas, but we can find constructive ways to address them. I am proud to say that I think we are better at this than most communities, but we need to work to maintain it.

Be open. AlliedModders was not the first Half-Life development community, but it has outlasted and overwhelmed almost all others. Our platform, source code, and development practices have always been open. Anyone can contribute. Projects are less likely to die if they are not dependent on their maintainer, and are more likely to succeed if they empower users. Even with open-source, it is possible to hold onto a project too tightly; if so, you and everyone else may lose it.
