I think birthdays got disabled accidently during one of the forum updates, I've turned them back on for now.
Visitor Messages were disabled because they were unmoderated and encouraging spam bots.

To be honest, don't bother with anti-spam suggestions without understanding the scope of the problem.

ReCaptcha has no effect what-so-ever, it's both a) solved at a technical level and b) AlliedModders is high-profile enough that people pay to solve the captchas.

The other oft-recommended solution of StopForumSpam had an effective rate of 5% against bots already stopped by our custom in-house solution.

At least bots like this one give me an excuse to post more interesting Report messages than "Spam"

For instance, this time around I sent the report as "Happy Spam Day!" or something like that.

Then again, one day, I think I used about 4 different quotes from Monty Python's Spam skit as report messages.
