Community servers have gone down over the years in popularity for a variety of reasons, most of which involve newly released games coming out to not have dedicated servers support which in my opinion is a problem.

Even if you remove the aspects of modding, dedicated servers allow games to live on indefinitely as long as the hardware exists to run the software. Even if companies shutdown their official servers they host for a game since it's no longer popular, people could host their own servers for players to play on and have fun with without the company being involved at all at that point.

The fact that you believe your server has grown has nothing to do with servers dying globally. The fact is, there ARE fewer servers running, there ARE more empty servers, and there ARE fewer people playing in community servers.

Dying would be an exaggeration, decline would be more appropriate.

I would say that most communities that were early adopters of the "stealing from Valve" bandwagon (!ws, !knife etc) are doing okay whereas the communities that only jumped on the bandwagon later out of necessity (to compete with the stealing communities) or communities that chose to respect Valve's guidelines are the ones more on a decline.
