The base dedicated server had no previous beta, so yes, this is includes everything from before it. The counter-strike client and dedicated server still have a separate beta, that beta is a different set of files, you could still opt into that (with "-beta hlbeta"). - Alfred

Now I am confused. Why would you need to forward your ports if you simply want to update? That should not be needed as it only downloads.

No it wasn't, the post mabachu quoted was the last time the word hlbeta was mentioned on the mailing lists and it was posted by Alfred Reynolds either yesterday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, work finally got around to blocking gmail or I'd log into my gmail account and quote the entire message including headers.

Hmm, seems hlds_linux was disabled for me. I see it mentioned now.

If you have your system setup to block both inbound and outbound connections, then you would need to open the port to get the update. I agree that it is pointless to block outbound connections in most cases, but there are some cases where I can see it might be worthwhile
