Ok Well heres the short and simple version of it.

Get steamcmd

login anonymous

force_install_dir ./hlds

app_update 90

then do it again a few times untill its not downloading anything anymore (re : the bug)

then do app_update 90 validate

Then once you have got it downloaded, in your shell, do not use the root user , create a new user called steam then switch in the shell to user steam

goto the directory hlds

once your linux shelll is on the hlds directory and you are user steam , put in the shell the linux commandline

./hlds -maxplayers 10 -port 27015 etc etc etc


if your runing 64bit linux distro you may get an error come up in shell . the error is t do with the missing 32 bit binary files because you are running 64 bit. Look that error up in google if you get it and it will tell you how to install 32 bit binarys when running 64 bit distro , the shell commands sometimes differ depending on your distro.

This won't work without problems as the user hlds is not the owner of the files, so he couldn't change them.

I didn't say it doesn't download stuff for you. I said it isn't valid. It is outdated and will not be supported here and therefore, should not be used.

I'm surprised it downloads anything... last I checked, Valve took down the content delivery network that hldsupdatetool used.
