Hi guys,

Can someone please help me understand how the steamgroup stuff works properly because I am so confused about this..

I have a small Steamgroup only 8 guys and we made a really nice server that we pay for privately. Its a Linux dedicated running a bunch of sourcemod plugins. 18 slots.

Problem is, no other people connect to our server.

The server is not Steamgroup exclusive - its set to Public (steam_group_exclusive 0).

We all see the server in the Steamgroup Server browser in game.

As a test, 1 guy left our group (the only group he was in) and cannot see the server or any other servers.

So we concluded only people in our group can see the server.

So as a test this 1 guy joins the Official Left4Dead2 group and suddenly he sees a ton of servers in the Steamgroup ingame browser (but he doesn't see ours).

He sees tons of servers that are owned by groups that he is not a member of.

How does that work? How do these other groups get their servers to show up by someone joining the L4D2 official group?

Any help very appreciated.

You can add this to the server.cfg
sv_steamgroup "123456"

it HAS to be a NUMBER or it won't work...
the number is the number of your steam group.
to add more than 1 steamgroup use "123456, 654321, etc"

Thanks - yes i know that and I already have our steamgroup ID in the config.

Someone else told me that I can add more steamgroup ID's like you say, but how do I get steamgroup ID's since they are not publically available? I would need the L4D2 official group's ID because that has tons of members, but whenever I try talk to a group admin of any large group they never respond.

It's considered extremely malicious by the owners of most groups, as you are basically affiliating your server with that group.

Yep, thats how I understood it - but then how come by joining the official L4D2 group suddenly a stack of servers show up? These aren't official servers, they are servers owned by other groups and I am not a member of those groups, and yet I can see them. It seems to me like there is some trick to getting them in the Steamgroup browser.

Because less than scrupulous server admins have added the official groups id to their server's sv_steamgroup convar.
