Understood, but isn't upgrading from vB3 → vB4 less painful than upgrading from vB3 → XenForo?

Not at all, XenForo is actually conceptually closer to vB3 than vB4 is (most of the vB developers left between 3 and 4 to create XenForo).

Last questions:

- is it really so risky to stay with vB3?
- is there anything what can be done/written to improve vB3, what could potentially consume smaller amount of time and work, than a full migration to a different engine?
