Well, I have to be able to have a method to increase the visible max player count before I really release anything. (I intend to release a plugin obviously to allow servers to operate more than 4 people.)

L4D has low players limit just because the bots spend to much cpu and bandwich. Also CVar that limits survivors is limited to 4 so you can't make it higher.

Anyhow, I've had the L4D dedicated server create over 500 common infected to come after my ass. It didn't eat up ANY CPU or Memory doing that. In fact, the only thing that suffered was my client (ended up crashing) and bandwidth.

I don't think you used the cvar actualy and that's what I said.

Indeed, survivor_limit is perma-set at 4. However it doesn't appear to really be enforced for much else. My guess is that it might have something to do with the visible max players along with the limit on Verses mode zombies.

If I made l4d I'd make maxplayers as survivors limit + player zombies limit.

4 is simply the upper bound for the survivor_limit. Remove it using SetConVarBounds and then it's changeable.

Did you try it? I tried once remove cheat flag from l4d and didn't work.
