So there's two concerns with making your HUDs official:

#1 is that some players remap their key, so RELOAD is no longer R. (in fact I do simply because I like my side mouse buttons to be usable in FF2)
#2 is that E is not supported by DOT. Only RELOAD and MIDDLE MOUSE (which is called "Special" in the key remap interface) Even if you go the key name route, there's no way to describe middle mouse without hitting a language barrier

That said, before my next release of DOT, I will add support for overriding the overlay image. (there's already support for disabling it entirely) Seems to be the best middle ground I can come up with.

Oh, so you're going to use it in regular FF2? (i.e. a modified fork or something) Cool.

BTW, here's the PDN for the original animation. If you have paint.NET, makes editing the contents a lot easier.

I can't see any white points. That image is too reduced.
(except maybe one to the left of the bubble, on top of the shotgun?)

Anyway, I guess the easiest way to deal with it is to add a temporary layer beneath the image you're editing, color fill that layer black, and manually remove all the stray pixels you find. (Paint .NET is really good with pixel editing, other programs I can't say)
