I used to use the student version of max(Essentially the same as the full pro version, just on a limited license), but now I want to get into Blender, but I'm sure processes can carry over outside of straight up making a model from scratch(Which is not what I plan to do or am any good at)

Well, if you know how to weigh models, its about the same.
Source engine is pretty lenient, there are blend weights, and afaik there is no bone affect limit.
I know some early engines and mobile based engines cap the affect at 3, or use rigid weights, so not having to worry about that is nice. However, Weights round off at 0.1 increments, so be careful of that rounding... A 0.09 won't weigh that vert to that bone.

There's plenty of information of the valve developer wiki... They have an entire section for modeling/model tools. I learned almost everything from there alone.
