Whats with the site?

The site constantly goes down, giving 500 & 503 errors or just failing to load at all... Are we being DDoS'd?

No, this has nothing to do with DDoS. Our infrastructure is a fragile blend of FastCGI hacks. At high load (particularly when backup scripts run) heuristics start failing. Apache refuses to spawn new PHP processes and you get a 500.

I have plans to move off FastCGI but I don't have a lot of time. So please bear with it and just hit reload

That was only an issue for a small window of time (maybe an hour - non-consecutively). Someone was hammering the site using a well-known Apache flaw that also has well-known fixes.
