Tutorial request; Stocks, forwards, natives etc

I have a bold request - just gonna throw it out there. I have tried to get a grip of what these following terms are, and I have yet to find enough information to really grasp it. I read the stickies I could find, and learned a few things by searching the function reference, but still lacking how to patch them all together to form the big picture. I have not yet downloaded+read the HL SDK, I am sure that's an advantage as you are getting into this some more, how essential is it?
I'd like a rough explanation (and of course code examples would be very much appreciated) of what these are/help you to do, what the differences between them are, and when to use which;
- Stocks, forwards, natives, modules, Engine vs Fakemeta (why haven't one replaced the other or been merged etc?)
I have previously worked with PHP, a little Java and barely touched C, but those are all new to me. When you see some of these are used commonly in plugins, and some others seems to be core features but then you find some outdated stuff in a topic here it quickly gets confusing. I am sure there will be others like me who would appreciate an overview of these. Not expecting a lengthy answer, but I am hoping someone will take the time to write a few pointers, or perhaps construct a cheat sheet table or something. Thanks a lot for any help.
