#1

Hey All

I've been looking at developing a few basic plugins for my server for a while now, but i dont want to spend a few weeks or a month or so getting basically acquainted with the language if its not going to be of much use in the near future.

What im concerned about is the release of CS:S

I mean is it worth learning to develop amxmodx plugins when CS:S is around and the majority of gamers will shift over to source in the next year or two ???

Will there be a version of AmxModX for source ?? or is that never going to happen ?? and if there is, will there be a difference in all the code/ will learning another language and list of functions be required ???

So............. is it worth it or not ?

This language is pretty similar to C#, if your one of those programming types (like me), you will learn it in a couple days by reading and editing plugins, and then looking through all the functions, and looking through the docs a bit. It's pretty simple, but I am still not that great at it.

If you are only interested in making Source plugins, wait until SourceMod comes out. While it will be (theoretically) possible to make plugins for SourceMode in Small, there will be other programming languages available which are considered "better" by certain people (ie: Bailopan).

first of all, how about not locking this thread because ive done a search and still cant find what im looking for :/

I cant find anything about whether amxmodx is going to be ported to source and therefore whether its worthwhile learning to write plugins for HL1 related stuff.

If a lot of the functions are going to be the same for HL2 then it obvioulsy makes it worthwhile

im not an idiot who expects ppl to teach me the scripting language, i just want to know where amxmodx is going....??

ty for replying XxAvalanchexX, this is the sort of thing im after. A lot of you guys have the experience and knowledge....so therefore do you think its worthwhile learning this stuff, or is it all going to change and not be worth much soon ??? I just dont want to waste my time

XxAvalanchexX...what are these other languages?? Is there a thread or any discussion about where we are going with server mods??

Well basically the language choosed for sourcemod(amxmodx for hl2) is javascript from what ive heard...
So basically you should start learning javascript(wich is in my opinion as easy as small) right away to be ready when they release sourcemod..

so really then the answer is up to the person in question.....

it looks like Small could be used to develop plugins for sourcemod, although other languages may well be more preferable...such as JavaScript.

After reading most of the stuff you guys highlighted - ty btw - there doesnt seem to be much point in learning Small... Its a pitty cos i prefer CS and CZ to CS:S at the moment
