HLDS will run on anything as old as a P1 as far as I know. The oldest thing I had it running on was a Celeron with a 500 MHz clock speed, but this stressed it a lot past the 8 player mark.

Just get yourself a cheap dual-core AMD cpu, like the 6000+ (or an Intel one if you wish) and you'll be fine. Like Hawk said, if you have to use a 1-core processor try to make sure it's not any older than a pentium 4.

If you're looking for cores that can handle server performance you should be getting an opteron or xeon...

Seriously? A xeon is far more overpowered than anyone would ever need to run a HDLS server.


If you're going to be getting a xeon, you might as well grab 8gb ram, and a t1 connection and host 5 servers.

HLDS is single-threaded, but if you're running more than 1 server, you'll notice a big difference. You can also assign each server to an specific core if needed.
