OR, instead of STORING the waste, we could do what we ORIGINALLY intended to do, which was recycle the waste and refine it (to make new fuel rods), and send the REAL waste (unrefined or unenriched Uranium 238 and lesser elements) to OTHER plants, which use the unrefined stuff, AND to breeder reactors (which can use and/or actively refine waste WHILE producing energy).
However, the companies owning nuclear power plants realized that uranium ore is actually cheaper than recycling uranium waste, so this whole "storage" thing came up. The technology allows for the cleanest energy source we have available, at the cheapest prices, but companies always look out for the bottom line. The result? More money for the CEO, same amount of energy for us, nature gets a kick in the tits.
Ah, capitalism.
