Do you have any other background programs running? Any AV or other sort of protection running? Firewall? is this dedicated? Or do you play on the same rig?

You said your friend has no gpu? I'm guessing that's just for his server and nothing else while yours has tiny processes that eat up your 512 memory.

What is your O/S?

Because, I mean it usually uses around 50-100mb (Well for me when I tested it). Add your O/s plus your background processes vs. his setup...

Try putting srcds.exe in "high priority" level ...

In batch command : start /high srcds.exe -game cstrike -console ...

You can use /realtime instead of /high if the PC runs only the server.

PS : Make sure you setup the server as your friend's ( tickrate, fps_max, ... ).

How many fps you have on your server ? You should have 500 fps, when it runs without any players connected.

I have putten it like:

-tickrate 66 - fps_max 600

my friend has

-tickrate 100 -fps_max 600

but his computer has a slower processor. Im gonna try the priority thingy.
Isn't there any tool to speedup the server apart from boost_mm ?

XP uses a lot of resources without you knowing it, if you used Linux for the operating system instead of XP it would be easier to allocate resources to the dedicated server rather then having XP "decide" which task is more important.

One thing I've noticed while using XP, even in mundane tasks as downloading from an HTTP site, if I leave it running with the window focus on the downloading window, it will go for a while and then suddenly slow down. When I looked into it, my window's operating system was stealing resources to run its own processes that don't even need the resources. I had to continually click the download window for it to recieve the resources again to download faster.

With Linux, I have not seen this problem at all. Plus linux is free, woo!

Also one more thing to consider, its not always just one thing causing the slow speed. It could be multiple things put together effecting it all at once. Like your antivirus could be slowing it down while scanning, along with all the window's operations. And if your running the GUI version of the server instead of the console. Slight things can help performance.

I did this small testing: Turn of everything even explorer! All not essencial processes. Gave it high priority and it seemed it worked a lot better! I'vent spoken with my friend for a while now to ask him those technicalitys but it seems to me srcds needs hight cpu comsumption has well has RAM to run well. And it kinda surprises me that my friend has such an slow cpu with so few memory running so well! Didn't felt a ich a lag on is server ever and he has a tremoundos amount of plugins and sounds to precache. Is using the Matties play soundtrqack thingy has well has a lot of other scripts and plugins!
