So I first tried a random sprite (.vmt & .vtf files) from a texture pack, and attached it to a player and it worked fine!

Then I attempted to make my own .vmt & .vtf file (made the sprite in Gimp2 & converted it using VTFEdit) - and when attaching that sprite, it's just a black square over the player(s) head.

I then attempted different stuff, and none worked. I also tried to just use VTFEdit to make the working file into an .png, then edited it using Gimp2, then changed the format using VTFEdit back to it's original extension. It resulted in a black square as well. I also tried to use the same .vmt (or .vtf, I can't remember which one is the "text" file with settings) settings for the working sprites, but still doesn't work.

Anyone know why that is? I also tried a random sprite that is in CS:GO's default files, it worked as well.
Just not the ones I've made.

Sounds like your choosing the wrong formats in VTFEdit when you import.

I'm on my way to work and cant screenshot my settings to show you.

Played around with the import settings and somehow managed to get it to work! Thanks.

Actually nevermind, first image I tried worked fine.
Now that I made my actual image that I wanted to have as a sprite, I'm getting:

Not sure if I did something different, but I don't think so.

I now tried to copy-paste the working .vmt & .vtf but change the name, and it wouldn't work. (I did change the $basetexture name as well) It gives me the same error.

If I keep it the same name however, it works. I'm pretty confused now. :-D

Yea. Make sure ur paths and names are correct.

Also make sure each frame is imported with the correct settings.

This stuff is all trial and error.

I forgot to mention u need an animating tag in the vmf which also sets the start frame and if it loops from memory

Not sure what the 'correct settings' would be tho.
