The info below is part of a tutorial I created:

The window in the upper left corner is our 3-D window, giving us a 3-D view of whatever we construct. In my configuration, the window to the right of this is the "Top" view (viewing from above and down toward where the ground will be). The window in the lower left-hand corner is the "front" view and the window next to this is the "side" view.

Let us first begin by changing the initial texture that we will be working with. On the right side of the screen, click on the button "Browse" (indicated by the green arrow):

You should now be presented with another screen similar to the one shown below showing all the textures that are available to us based on the wad files we installed or loaded into VHE.

Because I know the name of the texture that I wish to use, instead of scrolling through this window to find the texture we want, we are going to take a little shortcut (of course, you won't always know the texture name you're looking for, especially at this stage, so you may find scrolling through the window to be an easier method).

At the bottom of the screen there is a block labeled "Filter":

In this space, type "null" (without the quotes), and the screen should automatically update to show you all the textures that contain the word "null" in it (in this case there is only one).

Double-click on the texture itself and the window will close and we will return to the main hammer screen with the newly selected texture showing on the right-side of the screen:

On the left-side of the screen click on the "Block" tool:

Now move your cursor to the upper-right ("Top" view) window and with your mouse, left-click and while holding the mouse button in, drag it until you have a rectangle similar to the one shown (do not worry too much about how large it is per se, we can adjust the size later to suit our needs):

Once you have the shape, release the mouse button and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard. The dotted lines should become solid and the "Brush" we created should now be visible in the "3-D" view window. If it is not, then place your mouse anywhere in the "3-D" window and then with the cursor control keys on your keyboard, move left or right, up or down until you see it. You can also zoom in or out on the same window simply by turning the wheel on the mouse either forward (zoom in) or backward (zoom out). You can see that our "Brush" was created utilizing the texture that we selected.
