Aureal 3 Dimensional
It makes audio sound as though it were like real life. Designed for stereo speakers, and headphones. It pretty much emulates surround sound -- and did a good job.
They were overtaken by EAX, which was introduced later by Creative Labs. Creative, in their infinite sound card power, bought out Aureal, said they would remain a seperate entity, then dumped them. Since Creative controls about 99% of the sound card market, they had the power to dump A3D.
Although A3D was far more superior to EAX (all EAX does is calculate reverb and then create echo) technologically, Creative chose to keep their own software supported only. And, as such, no new sound cards support A3D.
